Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross, announced today she is undergoing treatment for early stage, non-invasive breast cancer.

McGovern had successful outpatient surgery February 11 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following early detection of her breast cancer in mid-January as part of an annual exam. Her doctors – after receiving the results last Friday (February 19) of the laboratory tests following the surgery – have determined that radiation therapy is the appropriate next step in the treatment. Her prognosis is excellent.

Because of daily radiation therapy over four to six weeks, McGovern’s travel will be curtailed, but she plans to continue to work full time from her office at the Red Cross headquarters in Washington D.C. during that time.

“I’m feeling healthy and very lucky that my wonderful team of doctors caught this early,” McGovern said. “I expect a full recovery, I’ve dealt with this before, I know what’s in store, and I plan to fly through it as I did previously.”

McGovern, 58, was treated for an unrelated breast cancer in 2006.
