AMERICAN RED CROSS HONORS HOLOCAUST TRACING CENTER VOLUNTEERS
The American Red Cross honored Central Marylanders who have displayed extraordinary acts of bravery, courage, kindness and community service at the 12th Annual Hometown Heroes Breakfast on Friday March 19th at Martins West in Baltimore. Among the honorees were several American Red Cross Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center Volunteers who received the Life Achievement award.
This year’s Life Achievement award, sponsored by The Associated Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, went to Lucy Carey, Ernie Kent, Mykola Koropeckyj, Emmy Mogilensky, Morris Rosen, Bertha Schwarz, Irene Seifter, Eva Slonitz, Rita Stern and Trudy Turkel serve the Red Cross as translators, tracers, researchers, specialists and advisers. Each of these amazing volunteers are also Holocaust survivors. Their personal stories of life before the Holocaust and of building new and productive lives since, are worthy of us all to absorb, remember and appreciate. These remarkable individuals bring smiles, laughter, and a light touch to work that is often difficult and at times heart-wrenching and serve as a daily reminder that the Tracing Center provides an essential service to survivors and their families.
The Hometown Heroes awards were presented by WMAR TV reporter Sherrie Johnson. Keynote Speaker was Matt Eversmann whose story is featured in the book and film, Blackhawk Down. Award recipients must reside, volunteer or be employed in Central Maryland (Baltimore City or Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford or Howard Counties).
The American Red Cross of Central Maryland shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides lifesaving blood to area hospitals; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
